Korea, Japan lead singles qualifying at World Youth

After two of four squads of singles qualifying at the 2014 World Youth Championships, Korea's Woosub Choi leads the boys and Japan's Mirai Ishimoto tops the girls.

Singles qualifying will conclude Saturday with the final two squads with the top four boys and top four girls advancing to the medal round Saturday evening at the SCAA Bowling Center. All rounds are being broadcast live on BOWL.com's BowlTV.

Choi leads the boys division with a six-game total of 1,413 (235.5 average), while Mario Herrera of Mexico is second with 1,388. Rafiq Ismail of Malaysia is third with 1,371, while Russia's Maxim Okorokov is fourth with 1,367.

Junior Team USA's Kamron Doyle six in sixth place with 1,331, while teammate Matthew Farber is 24th with 1,239. The United States' medal hopes will rely on Greg Young and Wesley Low, who will compete Saturday.

On the girls side, Ishimoto leads the field with 1,252 (208.6 average), while Macau's Veronica Dias De Souza is second with 1,226. Junior Team USA's Liz Kuhlkin sits in third with 1,216, while Merlina San Nicolas of Mexico is fourth with 1,213. Sarah Lokker of the United States is seventh with 1,177.

Junior Team USA's Stephanie Schwartz and Mary Wells will bowl their singles event on Saturday.

A total of 262 bowlers from 46 countries are competing in the World Youth Championships, which will award medals in singles, doubles, team, all-events and Masters.
