Michael Istvanek of Kenosha, Wis., has been selected as the recipient of the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Annual Zeb Scholarship.

Each year, the $2,500 Zeb Scholarship is awarded to a USBC Youth member who is a junior or senior in high school, has a minimum grade-point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) and has given back to their community through service. The award winner is selected by the International Bowling Campus Youth Committee.

Istvanek is a senior at St. Joseph Catholic Academy. He has a 3.9 cumulative grade-point average, has taken several honors and Advanced Placement courses, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

In addition to being a Student Ambassador and Key Club member, he has been a Peer to Peer tutor helping fellow students with algebra, and also played football and baseball.

He is a member of the Boy Scouts, and his community service has included Scouting for Food, Keep Kenosha Clean, Winter Holiday Food distribution and other projects. He currently is working on his Eagle Scout merit badge.

For being selected as this year’s Zeb Scholarship winner, Istvanek will receive an expenses-paid trip to the awards ceremony that will be held in conjunction with the Junior Gold Championships in the Buffalo, N.Y., area in July.

The USBC Annual Zeb Scholarship is named for Jim Zebehazy, who served as executive director of the Young American Bowling Alliance from 1996-2004 and currently is a Regional Manager for USBC.
