Women Better Than Men?!?

Well bowling is one of those sports where it does not matter who is tossing the ball down the lane but rather how the pins manage to fall down. Whether it is Sean Rash or Kelly Kulick throwing the ball, I am always looking to see who is truly the best and most consistent. Granted men will have the edge in power and revolutions more often than the women will due to natural structures of the human body. Don't get me wrong though, I have seen women with higher speed and rev rates than men. It is just a rarity to see that happen but it does from time to time. Women tend to have the edge in accuracy and consistency. Which one fares better when? I will try to break it down as fairly as possible.

Lets talk about how and why the men would fare better more often than not. Again men have more natural power going into their shots. With that power, the pins will be flying around more due to physics. Slower the speed, slower the pins will fall down. Higher the speed, the faster pins move and bounce around. Now I am not saying that if you throw the ball 30 MPH straight at the head pin, that you will strike every time. Entry angle is still the key in bowling. Now with the strength men have, they are able to keep their hand underneath the ball with more ease. What does that cause? More revolutions! With those revolutions, we then can make that bowling ball start hooking off the lane! Not saying that is a good thing but it will be a start to have your ball hook into the pocket. Now one of the down falls with power comes inaccuracy. Inaccuracy hurts you when you are trying to strike on tougher shots. For instance, sport shots, these shots require accuracy and consistency. Now for me personally being the average guy, I tend to struggle on that fresh sport shot. I usually try to over power the shot instead of playing in the small 1-5 board area that is available. Now once that sport shot breaks down a little bit and opens up, I usually start scoring better since I have a little more room for error. So men may strike more with their speed and revs, but when accuracy is needed, we tend to falter slightly.

Now lets bring women into the picture. How do they succeed against the men? Well lets take this year's PABCON into the picture. In the team event, the Women Team USA put up these numbers, 235(Josie Earnest), 268(Leanne Hulsenberg), 237(Diandra Asbaty), 270(Stephanie Nation), 237(Liz Johnson), =1247. Which with those totals in that one game alone was higher than any team, Men or Women, on a sport shot. So now your thinking, well that is one game, what about the total. The highest total on the guys side, Team USA with 6,687, as where the Women Team USA finished with 6,713. They bowled on the same pattern so no excuse there. Why did the women bowl better? In my opinion, accuracy and consistency. Bowling on sport shots require you to hit the same mark with the same speed and revolutions. Which again in my opinion the women have the edge on the guys in. Granted it may not be as powerful with speed or revs, but when you consistently repeat the shot it makes the game a lot easier. Which comes to another point the women may have the edge in as well, balance. With women being more flexible than men, they tend to have better balance at the line than men. Balance will help you with being consistent with your shot.

Now to summarize this battle up! Speed goes to the Men. Balance goes to the Women. Revolutions goes to the Men. Accuracy goes to the Women. Consistency goes to the Women. Better scores and averages at the end of the day goes to the Men. Why? If to take the nature of the game where speed and revolutions dominate the game which cause more strikes, the Men just have the edge. Don't take this the wrong way with me taking the Men overall. There is a female bowler by the name of Kelly Kulick that out bowled the best Men in the world by winning a PBA Title. So it can be done Ladies and Gentlemen! Thus the reason I love the game of bowling, anyone at any given time can put up a big number or win a tournament! Whether you bowl to have fun or bowl competitively, tell a friend and lets make bowling as popular as it was in the 60s and 70s!
