Storm has brought back the Catalyst Core in the Storm Crux Prime high performance bowling ball. This popular core has been known for its unmatched power, increased entry angle, as well as allowing more room for error due to dynamic asymmetrical design and vertical cavity technology. The SPEC coverstock used in this ball stands for Storm Performance Enhanced Coverstock. This special coverstock was specifically designed to endure the friction and oil a bowling ball goes through each time it is thrown down the lane. The SPEC Solid Reactive coverstock used on the Crux Prime is best used on heavier oil conditions and really shines when the lanes start to transition. No matter what lane condition this ball faces it will consistantly read the midlane and store energy for the backend.

I am not sure there is much that is offered stronger than the Crux Prime. It is high performance and one of the strongest balls on the market. Just below the Crux Prime you could go to an upper mid performance ball that is more suited for medium to heavy oil if you want a small step down or maybe go down to medium oil for a wider range between the two. I have been using a 15lb Storm Match Up which works great on my home lanes (wood) when they are drier but it absolutely skates when they are freshly oiled. I experience the same thing on synthetic lanes. I am an intermediate with a Norm Duke type delivery, would the Crux Prime be too aggressive for me in wet or synthetic conditions? If so what ball would be a step down in aggression?

The Storm Crux Prime will be much more aggressive than the Storm Match Up for the Match Up is a mid performance ball and the Crux Prime is a high performance ball meant for heavy lane conditions only. Anything less than the Match Up will be an entry level ball.

If you throw straight this ball will go straight. This ball requires the correct spin to hook so if you throw this ball straight it will go straight. You can get a much less expensive ball if you want the ball to go straight. There are straight bowling balls on our website as low as $44.99 at times so I would not recommend this ball if you were just needing a straight ball.

There are different kinds of reactive coverstocks. Solid reactive coverstocks tend to read the lanes earlier for a more gradual hook. Pearl reactive coverstocks tend to read the lanes later with a more angular hook on the backend. Hybrid coverstocks are a mixture of of solid and pearl coverstocks and read in between what a solid and pearl would do. There are also different levels and strengths to the coverstocks so depending on the performance level of the ball, the reactive coverstock could be stronger or weaker. This ball ( Storm Crux Prime ) is a high performance ball so the Solid Reactive coverstock on this ball is very strong and will hook a lot. But a Solid Reactive on another ball like the Storm Hy-Road X for example is not as strong because it was a mid performance ball. The strength of the ball is also directly related to the lane conditions the ball can hook in. Because the Crux Prime is a very strong ball, it is rated for heavier oil while the weaker Hy-Road X is more designed for medium to lighter oil because it is not as strong. Lastly, urethane coverstocks are not as strong as reactive coverstocks. So most urethane bowling balls will be rated for lighter oil or medium oil and have a lower hook rating in those conditions than a reactive ball would in the same conditions.

This ball has a Solid Reactive coverstock and it is a high performance ball. So it will require maintenance to keep the oil from soaking up too quickly into the cover. You will want to wipe the ball off when it comes back through the ball return with a towel and at the end of the night you will want to use a cleaner to clean the ball before you put it up. This will help the ball keep hooking strong for you for a long time.

The only difference between the 12lb ball and 15lb ball is the effect the weight block inside has on the performance. A 15lb ball has a RG 2.50 and a RG Dif 0.052. A 12lb ball has a RG 2.59 and a RG Dif 0.029. They have the same coverstock and finish so the difference is in the weight blocks effect.

The biggest difference is that the Crux-Prime is a solid cover with a duller finish which is made to read more in the midlanes with a smooth arc hook. The Code Red was polished to go longer and have more of a backend hook.

Yes, if you have heavier oil conditions and not a lot of revs then a duller high performance ball would be a good option. The duller finish helps the ball to start gripping earlier so with a higher ball speed it helps to get the ball started moving earlier.
